ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGES:
• To learn what is energy and its properties
• To know different sources of energy
• To understand how electricity generates and currents
• To talk and discuss about sustainable energy
What is energy?
Energy is the capacity to produce changes. It allows changes
in matter to take place: living things grow, clouds move, etc.
Humans need energy to do many things: walk, move, do exercise, study...
There are different forms (types) of energy.
ENERGY SOURCES
First of all, it is important to recognise the difference between energy sources and energy forms.
Remember! The energy sources produce the form(s) of energy. For example, food is a source of chemical potential energy. Heat is a form of energy that comes from many sources.
RENEWABLE AND NON-RENEWABLE SOURCES
Renewable energy comes from natural resources that are naturally replenished, such as sunlight, wind and waves. Renewable energy, such as wind or sunshine, can’t be stored to be used whenever we need it.
Non-renewable energy comes from natural resources that are not naturally replenished, such as oil and coal. Non-renewable resources, such as oil or coal, can be stored and used when they are needed.
ENERGY AND OUR ENVIRONMENT
The production, delivery, and use of energy sources can have effects on the environment.
Looking after our planet and water-saving essential for life on earth. Responsible consumption will be illustrated through the three R's: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
CLIMATE CHANGE
Climate change describes a change in the average conditions — such as temperature and rainfall — in a region over a long period of time.
Energy Detectives!
Part 1: The Case of the Mysterious Energy (15 min)
Copy and complete the following table in your notebook by doing some Internet research.
Where do we find it? (Real-life) Is it renewable or non-renewable?
Light energy
Chemical energy
Mechanical energy
Nuclear energy
Thermal energy
Electrical energy
Part 2: Choose Your Energy Superhero (15 min)
Imagine that each type of energy is a superhero.
-In your notebook, copy and answer these questions:
• What is your superhero’s name?
• What powers does it have?
• How does it help people?
• Who is the enemy?
-Draw a small picture of your superhero in action.
Part 3: Energy Around the World (5 minutes)
Find the 5 countries that use renewable energy the most. Write them in order.
Part 4: Green School (5 minutes)
Write a short paragraph (3–4 sentences) describing how your school can save energy and help the planet.
