CONTEMPORARY TIMES
It began with the French Revolution and the Industrial Revolution.
The French Revolution had a great influence in Spain and Europe.
HOW DID THE CONTEMPORARY AGE BEGIN?
At the end of the 18th century, Louis XVI ruled France as an absolute monarch. However, several groups were pushing for a change in society.
In 1789, the people rebelled against the king. Louis XVI was defeated and sent to prison.
This was the beginning of the French Revolution and the start of the Contemporary Age.
The leaders of the revolution organised an assembly and created a liberal political system.
CONTEMPORARY TIMES IN SPAIN
On the 2 May 1808 the people of Madrid revolted against the French Invasion. It was the beginning of the War of Independence. Other countries participated in the war. Great Britain was fundamental to the victory of Spain in 1814.
In 1812, during the war the first Constitution (La Pepa) in the history of Spain was written. It defended rights and liberties for citizens.
After the war Fernando VII returned to the throne. He abolished the Constitution and restored absolutism.
When the King died there was a period of wars to conquer the power. Carlos IV and Isabel II were two of the most important monarchs.
There were many advances in society, arquitecture and arts.
